Chapter 9
King Erickâs eyes blazed with rage and his muscles bulked out. Any minute, he was about to shift into his wolf.
Xavier stepped in front of me, growling, and his hair was thickening. Shit, he was threatening to shift too.
My heart thundered and my stomach bottomed out. I could barely breathe, I was so damn scared.
Not wanting to see father and son rip each other apart, I yelled, âNo!â Neither of them listened to me.
I had to put a stop to it. I tore off my sweater, leggings, and boots, then shifted into a dragon.
At the same time, the king and prince shifted into wolves, but before they could lunge at each other, I stepped in between them and spread my wings, knocking them backward.
Smoke streamed from my nose and I narrowed my eyes. If I had to, I would snatch Xavier up in my talons and fly down the tunnel.
âXavier, Erick, stop this instant.â
I looked over my shoulder to see Queen Anastasia.
She had on her hands on her hips, her hair had gotten thicker, and her eyes glowed. She was on the verge of shifting herself.
King Erick growled, but when he turned toward his queen, his ears flattened. Xavier snarled but sat on his haunches. I held my breath, ready to seize Xavier.
Anastasia snapped her fingers. âI said now.â
To my complete amazement, both father and son shifted back to men. I sighed and followed suit.
Xavierâs mother headed over to her mate and put her palms on his cheeks. âDo you love your son?â
King Erickâs eyes widened. âWhat?â
âYou heard me. Do you love your son?â
âYou know I do. You and he are all I have.â His voice choked.
He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her then kissed her.
I shifted back and quietly put my clothes on.
Xavier threw on his jeans. He was still scowling. Not knowing if it would work, I slid my palms down his back, feeling the tension leave him. He whirled around and kissed me deeply.
âXavier.â His motherâs soft voice was like a fog horn into my brain.
I untangled from him and put my hands on his chest, feeling his heart beating as fast as mine.
Xavier looked over my head.
âWe need to talk,â the queen said. âAll of us.â
King Erick held her hand and together we came out of the tunnel. He led us to his study and closed the doors behind us. He crossed his arms and sat on the edge of his desk.
Queen Anastasia took a seat on one of the loveseats. âLetâs all sit down.â She patted the cushion beside her invitingly.
I sat and Xavier immediately put his hand on my knee.
The king rolled his eyes but sat down. She clasped his hand and as if by magic, his knitted brow relaxed and the anger in his eyes was replaced with something else. Almostâ¦sadness? Or maybe hurt.
Anastasia looked between Xavier and I. âXavier, King Christopher contacted us and he was very upset.â
Xavier puffed out his chest. âI donât give a shit what he thinks.
